Digital Illustration Master Class (Auckland)
This Master Class gives students a rare chance to immerse themselves in an intensive two-day workshop with two commercially trained production illustrators from Weta Workshop. Students will explore painterly and expressive illustration through digital means - using a graphics tablet and Photoshop. Both tutors will be based in the same class, offering one-on-one tuition, which allows students to benefit from instruction tailored to their skill level. Students must provide their own tablet and have a basic understanding of photoshop (please see requirements).
Before the workshop, each student will choose a short piece of written text to bring
along. This will provide the basis for a series of exercises that will allow them to explore the illustrative process. Paul and Stephen will demonstrate and discuss how photoshop can be used to unleash ideas and produce numerous compositional roughs – from which, after the addition of various colour and dynamic lighting techniques, can quickly establish a foundation for the final illustrative piece. It is recommended the piece of text the student selects is descriptive and something they would enjoy painting. It is also a good idea that the text is geared towards their current ability, as this will make the exercises more rewarding.

Whether your drawing a Xenomorph or a Zebra, without the basic building blocks of illustration you can't hope to luck that your drawing will look how you want it to. The Drawing fundamentals workshop will take the student from the beginning stages of composition and perspective through to the use of negative space. Warren will also cover the subject of dynamics, line work and practice that will result in distorted faces, wonky buildings and asymmetrical tank turrets being a thing of the past!
Completing the Drawing fundamentals workshop will also be a great precursor to the 2d concept design workshop.

Traditional Sculpting for Creature Design
This workshop gives students the opportunity to take their character and creature design off the page. This course will show how accessible and exciting that sculpting is to realise their designs in 3D.
During the two days (8.30am - 6.00pm), the course will cover the process of sculpting a bust of a character/creature design. The students will examine the entire process used to produce a design maquette, armature making, what tools to use and how you can make your own and most importantly how to take an idea from a thought or drawing into a fully realised sculpture. Most of the course will be hands on with students working on a design maquette, this offers the opportunity of one-on-one tuition - which allows students to benefit from instruction tailored to their skill level.
At the conclusion of the workshop there will be the opportunity for students to have their portfolio reviewed along with any other personal work.
We provide: Modeling clay, armature wire, wood stand and tool making materials. Please see requirements.
